Setting the Scene
Hosting is about more than what is poured into the glass.
A few thoughtful details transform a tasting into an experience.
Consider including these elements:
Unscented candles
Fresh seasonal flowers
Linen napkins
Background music that encourages conversation
A clutter-free table
Plenty of water available throughout the tasting
These details create an atmosphere where guests naturally slow down and become more present.
Encourage Conversation, Not Competition
Wine tasting isn't an exam.
Some guests will notice cherries, while others smell cedar or simply say, "This reminds me of autumn."
All of those observations are valuable.
Instead of asking whether someone guessed correctly, ask questions like:
Which wine surprised you most?
Which bottle would you happily drink again?
What meal would you serve with this wine?
Which wine best reflects today's season?
If you could take one bottle home,
which would it be?
Often these conversations become the highlight of the evening.
At the End of the Evening
Once the final bottle has been revealed, invite everyone to revisit their scorecards and compare notes. You'll often find that the most talked-about wine isn't the most expensive or the one with the highest score—it’s the bottle that sparked the best conversation or paired beautifully with the food.
Take a moment to ask each guest to choose a favourite and share why. Those reflections become part of the evening's story and often inspire the theme for your next gathering.
